Children's Books for Pride

Pride Month is a month to honor individuals involved in the Stonewall Riots. It's about celebrating the work of LGBTQ+ individuals. It's about love and living your life as your *truest* without shame. It's a time to educate ourselves and our children about LGBTQ+ history *and* current issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

Reading gives us, children and adults, an opportunity to learn about places and people beyond our own bubbles. Beyond our own experiences. That's where understanding and compassion grows.

Reading allows us to make connections with ourselves, with others, and the world around us. That's where kindness and acceptance and empathy grows; toward others and toward ourselves.

I rounded up a list of children books that you can read with your family this, and honestly, every month. Pick a few titles. Sit down together and just read out loud. Pause to look at pictures, take time to talk about any questions that might pop up. Remember that it's 100% okay to say "I'm not sure, let's look it up!"

Mary Wears What She Wants is my currently personal favorite from the list. I heard it for the first time last weekend at a Drag Queen Story-time and Tea Party with our toddler. The book is about feminist badass Mary Edwards Walker. At the end of the book you can read her bio and it will make your jaw drop. The most amazing part, for me, she grew in our area! And did I ever once learn about this incredible women in school? Nope. Will I be spending time learning about this iconic woman? YES. This is what reading does! Opens our worlds.

You'll find the links for each book listed below. Happy Pride Month!
